Achyranthes aspera Linn. (Amaranthaceae) is an indigenous medicinal plant of India and is used in folklore medicine for ailments including asthma, fever, bleeding, in facilitating delivery, boils, bronchitis, debility, dropsy, dog bite, dysentery, pneumonia, renal complications, scorpion bite, snake bite and skin diseases etc . It is reported to contain alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, steroids and terpenoids. The present study highlights the Pharmacognostical as well as phytochemical studies including parameters such as Macroscopic, Microscopic characters, Physical evaluation and preliminary phytochemical studies of the Achyranthes aspera leaves. These observations will help in the Pharmacognostical identification and standardization of the drug in the crude form and also to distinguish the drug from its adulteration.
